What is Polygamy

There are multiple terms defining relationships that involve more then two individuals.

-Bigamous marriages involving one man and multiple wives each wife being unknown to each other

-Polygamy is like Bigamous marriages except all individuals are aware of each other. They come in three forms:

Polygnous marriages which consists of one man and multiple wives, also the most common.

Polyandrous marriages consists of one woman and multiple husbands.

Polyamorous relationships group of individuals having relationships all together.

Even though Canada and US do not formally register polygamous marriages, they do exist and have not been  actively prosecuted by some state and provincial governments; specifically Utah in US and British Columbia in Canada. Polygamy is common in multiple religious groups : Christians, Muslims (polygamy being legal in Muslims society) and even non religious individuals. Polygamy was always illegal in North America and it still remains to be. However the governments and courts are now facing the issue whether it should be legal or not which polygamous society argue that it violets their rights to practice their religion. On the other side non polygamous society's argue that polygamy violets human rights.

  1. Hi Dorina,
I have a few questions for you. First, are bigamous relationships apart of any religions? It sounds like cheating, with secret relationships that the other woman is not aware of. Also, you said that polygamy is common with Christians and I was wondering what denominations it is accepted in because I am Christian and I am against polygamy, (so is every other Christian I know). The bible says having multiple wives is wrong so I wonder where they find this ideal.

    Thanks for the post!

  2. Hi
Well bigamous relationships for some individuals is considered more of a cultural thing and for most of us it is cheating, however my initial purpose on defining bigamous relationships is that some polygamous believers argue and question governments why it is ok for other individuals to have more than one relationships at a time.

Well certainly not all Christians believe in polygamy. In 1830 the Mormon Church was found in New York where Mormons practiced polygamy which was illegal then too. In 1890 the Mormon Church stopped practice polygamy since it is illegal against the law and the bible dose not allow it. However there are groups of people who practice polygamy and claim to be Mormons even though the church dose not accept them.

However having said that there are other christian denominations and Mormons who believe in polygamy because of the inaccurate interpretation of the bible they hold.

Thank you, hope I answered your questions.

  4. Hello Dorina !
I found your post very interesting because I don not know a lot on the topic of Polygamy. I was not aware of all the different kinds of polygamy there is because I have only really heard of polygnous marriages. I am curious about what your stance is on the issue, do you agree with polygamy?
